Covert spy Michael Westen has found himself in forced seclusion in Miami—and a little paranoid. Watched by the FBI, cut off from intelligence contacts, and with his assets frozen, Weston is on ice with a warning: stay there or get “disappeared.” Driven to find out who burned him and why, he’s biding his time helping people with nowhere else to turn. People like socialite Cricket O’Connor whose own husband has vanished, along with her fortune...

Very well written. Reads just like the show. I can hear the characters voices as I read.
Fix you: when you get what you want but not what you need...2010-08-053 / 5
Michael Westen is in his own fix that he's trying to get out of; but, to pass the time as he tries to pick up the crumbling pieces of a dead career, he'll fix your problems for a fee but not because he wants to. He has no choice. Being burned has its uses, and while being burned is wholly against his will and not at all what he wants, Michael's gotta make a living and using his (ex-) spy skills for the mundane folks in the real world will do jut fine...for now.

Good ol' former Navy SEAL and snitch for the FBI Sam Axe sure knows how to pick 'em, and get Michael to say 'yes' when all Mikey wants to do is say 'no, no, no'. As Michael is wrestling with an old Russian, and personal (as in the physical) connection who aims to take him out while fending of the threat to his family, not to mention to clear his name of heinous accusations of drug trafficking, Sam's current girlfriend, Veronica has a problem. Her friend Cricket O'Connor has an even bigger problem. Besides the fact that she lives in Miami with as many lax laws on all the important criminal behaviors, such as...being a hop-skip-and-jump away to foreign countries who look the other way when criminals need to launder some money, hide it from the US government and buy some real estate to funnel more dirty money, never mind the fact that at one point she used to very rich. Enter the mysterious Dixon Woods, husband, thief and liar with drug and arms-dealing connections and the man Michael must track in order to get Cricket her money back. And smooth-talking, savvy and ultra smart Michael Westen, former CIA spy, will do whatever it takes, not just to help poor Cricket, or to get the misinformed Russians off his and his family's back, but the always important mission in his life: find out who burned him. And why. Then maybe pay them back, Michael Westen style.

Fans of USA's Burn Notice will love this 'first' book in this TV-tie in book series, which does well to not encroach and repeat what's already been aired on TV. I've been a fan of the show, but only after being convinced, so my expectations were high with the book version. Truth be told, I enjoyed this book when I didn't expect to. I've read 'offshot' novels based off TV shows and sometimes find them more enriching, but mostly finding the liberties taken by the author to be disquieting rather than amusing. This is fan fiction for other fans on an acceptable and legal stage. It's also done well, expertly written with great flare but in plain speak and enough grit that made allowed me to visualize each scene. However, while the dialogue is sharp, witty and crisp, it can come off robotic and bland, even for me. The interlacing plots, like in the TV series, was well-woven, smoothly executed and handled with deft intelligence. Goldberg has perfectly captured the voice, tone and speed of the TV characters but in no way captures each actor's subtle nuances on their characters. As a result, it a very flat book in which you, the reader, must supply all the extras. The lingo and the details of the spy life is tongue-in-cheek and always cool, always keeping the story a fast-paced one, even if the plot, in toto, lags toward the middle and end in figuring out Dixon, his game and his whereabouts and the secondary story-line of the Russians. The narrative got awkward when Michael is relating Sam's activities in which it's written as though it's from both Sam's and Michael's perspective...it was odd but not too distracting. Anyway, after that, it was mostly smooth sailing, even if the second half got extremely predictable and somewhat uninspiring. It's a nice light, action-adventure with some spy stuff thrown in. A good summer read while sitting on the beach, though if I'd read it again (well, probably not) but I will read the next one.

Those of you who have little previous experience with the show or not at all or didn't love it right away, will likely find this book tedious, too clever for its own good and while having many notable catchy one-liners, may find it too toneless and script-like. Because I've been watching this show and now a faithful follower, their characters on TV have been deeply imprinted and as I read along, how I take them is infused in how the characters are depicted and the scenes laid out. At times, it is barebones and I'm supplying the look of the scene, how the action went because Goldberg follows so faithfully the structure, look and feel of the TV show with immense ease. I enjoyed it but the ho-hum plot, as I've said, lagged and became predictable. I liked that Goldberg stayed true to the TV and the characters, and didn't deviate onto his on tangent or his own interpretation of the TV show and I'll likely pick up the next, just for the witty phrases. And with a passable plot and adroit writing skills, sometimes, that's good enough when you just need a quick fix yourself.
JUST AS FUN AS THE SHOW2010-04-055 / 5
BURN NOTICE
THE FIX

I love the show in which this book was based, it is with out a doubt one of the greatest shows of all time. Of course I originally started watching it because of the great Bruce Campbell. But as soon as the show started I loved everything about it, so of course I had to get the books when they came out. Still not sure why I never reviewed this before but I guess the time is now. I have been doing a lot of reading lately, not to long ago I spent a lot of time in a hospital. I also spent a lot of time in Maryland so I brought a lot of books and got some reading done.

This book is amazing mainly because when you are reading it the book really feels like the show. It is narrated by Michael in the same way he narrating the show, I love how it was written. Written wonderfully by Tod Goldberg this is a highly entertaining read, especially if you like the show. He found a way to make this book feel like the show, it was not hard to get into this story at all. In fact when I was reading the book I was actually playing it in my head like the show, I could see it.

The story like the show has two different stories going on at the same time, one for each side of Michael's needs. One is for his need to find out more on his Burn Notice although this time it is a little more forced. Then another is a job he takes on with Sam who of course on the show is the great Bruce Campbell. And just like the show they mix both of them so well and start to mesh them together some how, I love it. One story involves a woman whose husband is missing, and the other involves a former lady friend of Michael's.

After going to a lunch meeting with his mother and noticing some suspicious people who are armed lurking about, Michael finds out an old friend is in town. Her name is Natalya and she was looking to get Michael's real love Fiona, and all because she needs his help. Natalya is in some trouble and basically puts it all onto Michael, but he may get closer to his Burn Notice. Also factor in that he kinda does not have a choice in the matter, so off with Fi and Sam he goes. A lot of great and exciting things happen in this book and Natalya just strikes me as sexy.

The other side to this story involves a case Sam brings to Michael's attention, a woman named Cricket O'Connor is missing husband and her money. Of course you can put two and two together but there is more to the story then there seems. So sensing that Sam really wants to help this woman Michaels comes aboard and takes on this case at the same time. So not only does he have to help find this woman's husband and money but also deal with Natalya. The action is fast paced and should not take long to read at all.

All of the humor, action, and style of the show can be found within the pages of this book. For any one who is a fan of the show there is no doubt in my mind you will like this. And for book readers who may not watch the show this one right here may just make you a fan. I guess I need to review the next book and let you all know about that one, but until then enjoy this one. I had a great time with this book and recommend it to all out there reading.
If you like the series you will love the book!2010-03-244 / 5
Written just like an episode except with cursing. LOVE IT! Easy and fun read.
Really wanted to like this.2010-03-222 / 5
Let me start off with I'm a HUGE fan of the show. During the off season I picked this up to feed my fix till the new season. I wanted to like this book, I really did, but I couldn't get past the first 40 pages. My problem wasn't as much with the story as the writing itself. Misspellings, grammatical errors, and an abundance of run-on sentences made this very awkward to read. While the story seemed intriguing, I just couldn't get past the style of writing.
