Cool! The brand new boy and girl themed Advent Calendars!
| Playmobile Advent Calendar | 2009-12-21 | 5 / 5 |
| | We bought 2 calendars for our 5 and 8 year old. Every morning feels like Christmas as they rush down the steps to open the calendar. Unfortunatley we paid way too much on line, $39.00 when my husband found them at Toys R Us for only $19.00!! I felt so ripped off but blamed myself for not doing the research, always assuming is great. Not realizing tha I was ripped off! Shipping was fast. |
| Just done forget to put it together | 2009-12-18 | 4 / 5 |
| | We missed the directions where you put the entire calendar together. On the first day my son opened (YEs I was out of room.) He reached in and grabbed a bag full of about 1/3 of the 25 days worth of toys. Turns out I was supposed to open and put pieces into the individual daily slots myself. Just remember to do this. |
| Ridiculous - comes totally unassembled! | 2009-12-10 | 2 / 5 |
| As other reviewers had mentioned, this advent calendar comes completely unassembled! I'm not talking about putting a couple trees together or unfolding a cardboard set (which, by the way, you also have to do) - I mean, you CAN NOT use the product as it is intended until you rip all the packaging apart and painstakingly create your own cardboard grid, so that you can actually use the 'punch-in windows' feature that we're all familiar with when using an advent calendar.
My son was so excited when he unwrapped the calendar. We've been learning how to use a calendar, and he'd been waiting for HIS calendar on the wall to say Dec. 1st, so he could punch open his first door and find an animal. Well, we punched through door # 1, and found...nothing! The box was hollow except for plenty of bagged-up animals & food, and a bunch of cardboard strips meant to be used to build the advent calendar.
This should at least be stated on the box, so we can be prepared ahead of time.
Now, all that having been said...this is a wonderful playset. The animals are fairly realistic and detailed for a children's toy, and there's lots to do...feed the animals, let Santa deliver the Christmas feast on his sled, count the birdies in the treetops, and hide the baby animals under the tree stumps, just to name a few.
My son continues to have a great time with the set, and we're considering purchasing other Playmobil products to add to these.
But the main point of this purchase was watching my son's eyes light up each day to mark the days of the Christmas season, and that part is hopelessly lost.

| Missing Pieces; doesn't say "Assembly Required" | 2009-12-07 | 1 / 5 |
| First problem: apparently you have to be familiar with this toy ahead of time (or be psychic) to know that you have to dump everything out of the box, hand-assemble a grid array, then insert the various pieces for the different days, and only THEN give it to the child. If you're used to Lego's advent calendar, don't think you can just give this one to the child like you can with that one!
Second problem: Our box was missing the cute little Christmas tree from day #1, so she had to use the dead tree stump from day #2 in order for the animals to have anything to gather around!
The low rating on "how much fun is this toy" is a combination of the ridiculous amount of work required to get it presentable to the intended recipient (if this is for a gift, you can't give an unopened, "new" box since you have to open it to assemble it first!) combined with how much fun it is to receive a toy with missing pieces (box was sealed, so package came this way).
As for the price, pick it up from Target for the $19.99 mfg. retail price, don't pay double here. And if you don't mind your kids having the exact same calendar, just get the Lego one for each of them. It's ready to go without any extra hoop-jumping on your part, I've never had one missing pieces, and the play value of both is about equal (actually Lego probably wins there, too, because you aren't limited to the existing configuration of the pieces, you can make them into something entirely different, whereas with Playmobile, a tree is a tree is a tree and always will be a tree. |
| Great value and so much better than Lego! | 2009-12-03 | 5 / 5 |
| | Last year we bought a Lego advent calendar. If you read the reviews of that you will see a common theme, that there are a lot of senseless little pieces that are not exciting and it really doesn't make any sense or come together in a really definable scene. This one is SO MUCH BETTER! There are a few days where you get some small items, but there are also a lot of days you get larger items, such as animals. I think that these are a little bit more expensive, but the value is evident as soon as you open the box. There is the added fun of the backdrop that you can use to set the scene against as you open the doors and reveal the pieces. Now, I will say, there is A LOT more set-up involved in these. The calendar is not already set up. You have to punch out the divider tabs and fold the little cubbies, AND, all the little pieces are in plastic baggies all mixed up and you have to separate them out and put them in the calendar. It took me a few minutes of staring at it to process what I was looking at and then it took me about 20 minutes to get it all set up. Actually, I had fun, but some of you might not and so you need to be aware of the work involved, because you HAVE to set it up before you give it to the child or they will know what all the pieces are. Overall, if you are a die-hard Lego fan you probably love the Lego advent calendars despite what I find to be lacking value, because you can add the pieces to a Lego collection. If you love Playmobil, same thing with this one. However, if you are like me and have not decided on a camp, or are really just looking for a GREAT advent calendar, I would definitely recommend this one over the Lego. We also have the Police themed one, and it is also very cute and well worth the money. This one was purchased for our almost 3 year old and the police one was purchased for our almost 5 year old. They are perfect for their respective recipients. |
